Scandinavia has attracted prominent hyperscale data centers in recent years, including Facebook, Google, Apple and AWS. Hyperscalers contribute to sustainability through higher utilization, sourcing of wind power and more efficient power distribution and cooling. Meanwhile, most co-location data centers and on-premise data centers are geographically immobile, have inflexible and inefficient power and cooling solutions, show limited interest in renewable energy markets and are of sub-optimal scale with low average utilization. A new breed of multi-tenant data centers can take the best from both worlds and combine efficiency with local optimization. This requires novel business models, innovative technology solutions, to some extent new policy and, most importantly, a new type of relationship between providers and customers.
