Dr Jean Bogais

Dr Jean Bogais is a strategic analyst / advisor with over 30 years-experience as an academic and professional working in spaces of violence. A Paris-Sorbonne educated sociologist (PhD) and social and intercultural psychologist (M.A.), his principal interest is socio-ethics and their applications in deconfliction initiatives, negotiations, information warfare & Cyber and civil/military interventions. He has prepared critical assessments and advised government officials and military agencies at the highest levels, also working on complex strategic simulations. He teaches/mentors tacticians and systems specialists (Royal Australian Navy / Fleet Air Arm) and creates pilots courses to test new systems of thinking. He has had ongoing involvement in deconfliction initiatives, conflict resolution strategies, front-line negotiations and international missions. Applying complex systems to strategic analysis and decision-making/taking, he has considerable experience in building networks that can identify and manage uncertainty / instability to introduce change over time.

Dr Bogais is an internationally recognised specialist in Southeast Asian affairs, especially Myanmar, Cambodia, Philippine and the South China Sea.

He is an Associate Professor (adjunct), specialist lecturer and research supervisor
 within the School of Social & Political Sciences and the Centre for International Security Studies at the University of Sydney. He is a Senior Research Fellow at the German-Southeast Asia Centre of Excellence (CPG), a joint institute attached to the Faculty of Law of Thammasat University in Bangkok. CPG built upon the cooperation between four universities - Thammasat University (Thailand), and Frankfurt University, Münster University, Passau university (Germany). Dr Bogais is also a Senior Associate/Adviser with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Washington D.C. CSIS is one of the largest foreign policy institutes in the United States.

Privately, Dr Bogais is a long-time dedicated sailor. He has completed a one round-the-world solo sailing journey.
