Prof C. Paul Bonnington
Professor and Director
Monash eResearch Centre
Prof Paul Bonnington’s research interests lie with developing advanced computational solutions to combinatorial problems particularly in the areas of big data, discrete geometry and graph theory with applications to network layout and bioinformatics. He has published in a wide range of journals, and a book on the foundations of topological graph theory. He served as president of the Combinatorial Mathematics Society of Australasia, and Chief Managing Editor of the Australasian Journal of Combinatorics.
Prof Bonnington spearheaded New Zealand’s first national eResearch Infrastructure Programme, and was recruited to lead the Monash eResearch Centre in 2007. The centre has grown to 40 staff, and been selected to host over $15M of Australia’s federally funded national eResearch Infrastructure components for specialised high-performance computing, research cloud services and data storage and data management.
The work of the centre, particularly in big data real-time processing, is internationally regarded and many of the innovations of the centre have been adopted in related European projects. The Monash eResearch Centre recently established the new MASSIVE3 hybrid-CPU/GPU supercomputer (at the time Australia’s largest research CPU/GPU-cluster) and an Australian-first strategic partnership with US GPU manufacturer Nvidia to develop new analytical tools for real-time instrument data processing.
