5G will enable new use cases like HD video, high quality VR/AR applications, industry use cases for robots and autonomous vehicle control. This will require compute capacity close to the user or the equipment. Edge datacenters, small modules on the wall, by the basestation, remote or in city centers will be a new infrastructure for society and industries.
Digital Transformation & the Data Center Edge
These edge data centres will be an integral part of the power distribution grid with closely integrated power generation and storage (coming from solar, wind, etc) enabling off-loading, balancing and peak shaving, and additionally these facilities will become an integral part of the thermal distribution grid with integrated cooling and heating generation enabling a circular economy and energy re-use in industries and city infrastructure, such as process heating and cooling, infrastructure thermal control and food production. RISE SICS North has worked in line with this Smart City vision in several projects. We have also implemented demonstrators and testbeds to do large-scale experiments and show concepts supported and enhanced by simulations and modelling. It is all part of the effort to support the data centre sector to develop new technologies and concepts for the future smart society.
